La Faraona is the undisputed pinnacle of Descendientes de J. Palacios, project founded in 1999 by legendary winemaker Álvaro Palacios and his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios in the D.O. Bierzo.
Much like L'Ermita did for Priorat, La Faraona revolutionized the global perception of the indigenous Mencía grape, proving it capable of producing ethereal, mystical wines that stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the finest Burgundy Grand Crus.
600 to 1,000 bottles per year made in the most extreme terroir in Bierzo, in
Paraje El Ferro, a tiny 0.5-hectare (1.2-acre) plot in the village of Corullón, sitting at an extreme altitude between 855 and 975 meters.
To make it even more unique and peculiar, the vineyard sits directly on top of a volcanic tectonic fault line. The ancient, 70+ year-old vines dig their roots into a chaotic, mineral-rich mixture of decomposed slate, quartz, iron, and basalt.
Grapes: mostly Mencia, in strict
biodynamic farming.
Aromas of wild berries, crushed violets, incense, and orange peel, backed by a profound, smoky, and earthy mineral core. The palate features silk-spun tannins and an endlessly long, energetic finish.
A frequent recipient of the coveted 100-point rating from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
